Perform ICT data conversion

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICTPRG528 - Perform ICT data conversion
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to translate information and communications technology (ICT) data from one format to another, by means of a data conversion process. It applies to individuals in support and implementation roles who are required to convert data from one system to another. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the programming and software development industry, and include access to the:

analysis of the source data

business quality assurance rules associated with data

data mappings

logic to convert the data

plan of the conversion routines

software development environment

technical requirements

data conversion plan

appropriate learning and assessment support.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare the system for conversion
  • Obtain the data stores that are subject to conversion
  • Protect and confirm backup solutions
  • Trial conversion work in an isolated environment, secure from the production system
  • Map and document, the required data fields from the old system to the new or upgraded system
  • Determine field validation requirements from conversion plans, including data field legal ranges
  • Determine the actions to be taken with the fields or records that are rejected by the conversion plan
  • Consult stakeholders on the creation of a conversion plan
  • Design the data conversion program modules from the conversion specifications
  • Code and test data conversion program modules, according to conversion specifications
  • Confirm data conversion and test the converted production data

Element: Perform data conversion
  • Estimate and plan for conversion time
  • Prepare the production system for data conversion and take off-line
  • Undertake action to protect production data
  • Take action to ensure minimal disruption to client business requirements during the conversion process
  • Document the data rejected by conversion routines, and the reason for rejection
  • Execute the conversion program modules
  • Document the results of the conversion process, and report to the appropriate person

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare the system for conversion

1.1 Obtain the data stores that are subject to conversion

1.2 Protect and confirm backup solutions

1.3 Trial conversion work in an isolated environment, secure from the production system

1.4 Map and document, the required data fields from the old system to the new or upgraded system

1.5 Determine field validation requirements from conversion plans, including data field legal ranges

1.6 Determine the actions to be taken with the fields or records that are rejected by the conversion plan

1.7 Consult stakeholders on the creation of a conversion plan

1.8 Design the data conversion program modules from the conversion specifications

1.9 Code and test data conversion program modules, according to conversion specifications

1.10 Confirm data conversion and test the converted production data

2. Perform data conversion

2.1 Estimate and plan for conversion time

2.2 Prepare the production system for data conversion and take off-line

2.3 Undertake action to protect production data

2.4 Take action to ensure minimal disruption to client business requirements during the conversion process

2.5 Document the data rejected by conversion routines, and the reason for rejection

2.6 Execute the conversion program modules

2.7 Document the results of the conversion process, and report to the appropriate person

Evidence of the ability to:

define the inherent data requirements of both old and upgraded, or new systems

remodel data to achieve successful conversion

back up data prior to conversion

effectively code conversion programs.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain hardware and software products, including their general features and their capabilities

explain data conversion tools and data modelling methodologies

outline the conversion from legacy systems

outline industry-accepted database management system (DBMS) modelling.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
